Capital came back to games — but it landed in fewer, larger rounds
After two flat years, disclosed early-stage capital rose sharply through the first half of 2026. The headline looks like a recovery. Read the round sizes and it looks more like consolidation: the same dollars, concentrated in fewer teams with a shipped title or a live audience already in hand.
We tracked publicly disclosed rounds across the period and split them by cheque size. The count of deals barely moved. The median cheque did. Studios raising a first round with only a prototype found the room noticeably colder than teams who could point at retention curves. The takeaway for founders is uncomfortable but clear: proof of players now outweighs proof of ambition.
